The teething period or duration for puppy happens much earlier than human being. The teething period for puppy can starts as early as 3 to 4 weeks of age for most of the breed of puppies. Therefore, during this period of age, you will notice your puppy starts showing symptoms of teething such as excessive biting or chewing, drooling, swollen gum and so on. The duration of teething can last as long as 1 to 2 months which means your puppy will have a full set of teeth at the age of around 8 to 10 weeks. Please note that there will be another round of teething period when your puppy reaches the age of 4 to 5 months. We will talk about it in the following paragraphs.

During the first teething period when the puppy is around 4 weeks old, the first tooth that appears is the baby canines tooth. The baby canines tooth is the longest tooth on each side in the front of the mouth. They can easily be noticed when you open the mouth of your puppy. After that, at around 4 to 6 weeks of age, the incisors (tiny teeth at the front) and the premolars (the larger side teeth) will begin erupting. By the age of 8 weeks, the teething process should come to an end and a puppy should have a total of 28 baby teeth.

As mentioned in the first paragraphs, there will be a second round of teething for your puppy. The first set of baby teeth for puppy will only be around until the age of 4 to 5 months for your puppy. At this age, your puppy has already entered its teenager age and most puppies will begin shredding their baby teeth and by the age of 7 to 8 months, all permanent incisors, canines, premolars and molars should have erupted. This round of teething period or duration last longer than the first one and it takes around 3 to 4 months for all the baby teeth to be replaced with adult teeth. Most breed of adult dogs will have 42 teeth.

Knowing the duration or period of puppy teething is important as it prepares you with enough time to deal with your puppy and your puppy teething won’t come as a surprise to you during the teething period. Moreover, your responsibilities such as buying teething toys and teething cookies for your puppies won’t be neglected if you know in advance the period or the duration of puppy teething. Other than preparing your puppy with toys and cookies, knowing the puppy teething period is a good practice in order to allocate a separate room or space which is free from hazardous items for your puppy so that your puppy won’t be harmed in anyway. In some cases where the teething period is too short or too long, there will be irregular teething patterns and the serious cases will results in missing teeth or bleeding gum. In this case, you will know which vet to take your puppy to if you have a list of contacts of veterinarians in advance.

In addition, you should provide your puppy with plenty of exercise and play time. This will help prevent boredom. Train your puppy not to nip or mouth your hands. If he does, give a loud, high-pitched ‘no’ and stop playing immediately. Totally ignore him for a few minutes. Over time, he will learn that playing too rough causes the fun to stop. Don’t ever hit or slap a puppy as this can come back to haunt you in the form of aggressiveness or hand shyness.

Moreover, you can remove temptation by keeping children’s toys, valuables, garbage, and hazardous items, such as electrical cords, out of your puppy’s reach. You can also keep your puppy in a room or an area where there are no hazardous items that can harm him when your puppy is teething. Provide him plenty of toys and chewing items to occupy his time. This is a good practice to keep your puppy safe when you are away.

As for dental care, you should take your puppy to the veterinarian for regular dental exams to root out any possible dental disease. Do ask the veterinarian about a diet that will enhance dental health.

Last but no least, regularly brushing your dog’s teeth at home is very important. Dogs are more cooperative if this is started at a young age. Any soft toothbrush or a piece of gauze wrapped around your finger will work. Be sure to use toothpaste formulated specially for dogs as human toothpastes can upset their tummy. This should be done daily or at least several times a week. This, and periodic professional cleanings throughout your dog’s life, as recommended by your veterinarian, will help prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease which can lead to painful abscesses and damage to internal organs.

As we had talked about it in the article what are the symptoms of puppy teething?, the most obvious sign of puppy teething is excessive chewing. Your puppy will just chew on anything that its mouth can get on. The chewing is a way of relieving the sore and pain caused by the eruption of teeth. Therefore, quality care must be given to your puppy.

First of all, if you had a puppy as your pet, you need to accept the fact that some form of chewing must be allowed for your puppy. Sometimes your puppy may chew to a certain degree which is not necessary caused by teething. It’s a way of your puppy to relieve boredom and a form of playing. When your puppy is growing up, just like our baby, they are curious about the environment and the surrounding area where they live. Therefore, puppy will chew as a way of exploring the world that your puppy is fascinated with. But you as a pet owner must control your puppy to avoid excessive chewing and the chewing must be directed in positive way so that your puppy can live harmoniously with your family.

Controlling your puppy in terms of what to chew is an easy task. You can get teething and chewing toys for your puppy from the pet stores. Make sure these items are safe and not something your puppy can choke on. Good choices may include rawhide chewies (the crumbly kind; not the leathery kind), toys that can be filled with treats, and rope toys. You may even wet and freeze rope toys, or even a carrot, to help relieve sore teething gums. Rotate the toys so that your puppy doesn’t become bored. If you catch him chewing on your shoes or the tv remote, give him a stern ‘no’ and replace it with one of his chew toys.

Just like human being, when a puppy starts to teeth, the puppy will show symptoms of teething. Some teething symptoms for some puppies tend to get serious. In this case, you probably have to intervene to help alleviate the pain and the discomfort caused by teething. On the other hand, some teething symptoms are not so serious. Therefore, you probably don’t need to do anything. Your puppies have their own way of relieving the discomfort. It’s part of nature. All you need to do is to ensure you puppies don’t chew on hazardous objects such as an electrical cord.

The most obvious puppy teething symptoms is excessive chewing. In some serious cases, your puppies might tend to chew on everything that they can get their mouth on. They do that to alleviate the discomfort and pain felt in their gum. When the teeth starts to erupt, the gum will be swollen and it can be easily spotted and this will cause serious pain and sole in their gums. That’s why your puppy chew. Therefore, having plenty of chew toys and rawhide bones will help. Some puppies will chew more than other puppies and they will chew on other things even though they have chew toys and bones. Therefore, it is a good idea to restrict where your puppies go in the house so that they don’t have access to anything that can harm them.

Besides, sometimes you will notice your puppies got a bleeding gum and some teeth might be missing which is caused by excessive chewing. Some puppies owner had said that they noticed their puppies swallowed their teeth when they fall off. When you can’t find the missing teeth, it’s a good chance that the teeth is in your puppies stomach. But this won’t cause any harm as the teeth will most likely come out through their poop.

Other than this, you will also find teeth mark and fallen teeth as well as little spot of blood spots on your sofa and bed. These are all signs of your puppy teething. Some puppies might even cry and show signs of irritability such as low appetite and lack of sleep.

If you own puppies, please let your puppies to have a considerate amount of chewing. Don’t beat or scold your puppies for chewing. It’s just their nature. Remember to shower them with lots of love and play with them as often as you could.

As puppies are born without teeth, they have to teeth just like human so that they can chew on solid food. Therefore, puppy teething is a process in which new teeth starts to appear. It’s part of the life of every puppy and every puppy has to go through this when they are growing up. When puppy start to teeth, just like our babies, there will be some kind of teething symptoms shown up on your puppies. The obvious symptoms such as chewing and swollen gum are the very first sign of your puppy teething. If you are worried about your puppies when they start to teeth and the teething process tend to get serious, you can bring them to visit a veterinarian.

The teething process for puppy happens much earlier than human being. The teething process starts as early as 3 to 4 weeks of age for most of the breed of puppies. The first tooth that appears during puppy teething is the baby canines tooth. The baby canines tooth is the longest tooth on each side in the front of the mouth. Most breed of adult dogs will have 42 teeth.

Simply put, puppy teething is a normal process where baby teeth are starting to come out. There will be some teething symptoms and at this age, you need to take good care of your cute puppies, just like what we need to do to our babies. When your puppy has grown to an adult dog, it’s encouraged to brush the teeth of your dog starting from young so that your pet will be leading a quality life free of disease.

Puppy teething is a sign that your puppy is going through a process where new teeth start to appear. During this teething period, puppies will instinctively chew, not because they want to punish you for leaving her home alone and locking her in a crate. They chew because they need to at this period of teething. When teething, puppies will chew to alleviate as much discomfort as they can. Think about it, if you had 42 adult teeth growing in, you’d want to alleviate the pain. Puppy teething is part of the life of every puppy and care should be attended as much as possible to your puppy during this period.

Puppy teething often worries dog owners who complain about not knowing how to deal with the pet’s increasing need to chew at things. There are two teething periods, one at around three or four weeks of life when the baby teeth erupt, and another more difficult period at six or seven months of age when the adult teeth appear. The first teeth that start to appear are the canines, followed by the incisors and the premolars.

Puppy teething signs are very easy to spot. There are specific signs that indicate puppy teething.
Puppy teething comes with some discomfort caused by the soreness and pain from the swollen gum. Part of the discomfort caused by teeth eruption can be alleviated by the use of special powders and gels designed for veterinarian use.

In addition, a normal level of chewing needs to be accepted by any dog owner during puppy teething as the pressure on the gums reduces your pet’s discomfort and the mouth soreness. During puppy teething period, the dog will chew everything from socks to shoes to furniture. Nevertheless, if the chewing habit gets disruptive, a firm control of the dog’s urge is required.

To avoid any mess around the house as well as the creation of a very bad habit, you should provide your puppy with plenty of toys to chew. Puppy teething is easier for both the pet and the owner when rubber objects keep the puppy distracted as well as from chewing your home’s furniture and at the same time relieving the pressure in the gum of your puppy.

Frozen food or a cold piece of cloth and even a dampened and frozen rope could work wonders for soreness alleviation during puppy teething time. Any cold object will have a positive effect on the swollen tissues, allowing the dog to be able to eat normally. You could try this method at least two times a day in order to help the pet cope better with pain.

Ice

Puppy teething toys found at pet stores

Frozen fruits and vegetables such as carrots, strawberries, watermelon, apples, sweet potatoe, etc.

Freeze natural bones that you’ve filled with peanut butter, cheese wiz, cream cheese, etc. (STAY AWAY from rawhides as they do not digest properly in a dog’s body)

You can put broth in ice cubes, and freeze them before giving it to your puppy. The taste alone will entice your puppy to chew them.

Dip knotted socks or towels (remember knotting them will create a difference between a forbidden object such as new socks and an object that the puppy can chew, such as old socks) into broth and freeze before giving it to the puppy.

In short, puppy teething is a natural process and is part of the life of every puppy. You shouldn’t get too worried about it and as long as your puppy are taken care of during this period, you and your pet can pretty much lead a happy life.
